Before reading Steinbeck's The Pearl the class wrote journal entries and discussed the ideas of money, poverty, greed, etc.

Some of the journals that we responded to and discussed are as follows:

How would you change if you had a lot of money?

Would your personality be different?

Would you ever take a risk to reach a goal?

Would you ever hurt members of your family just so you could be accepted by your friends?

The class spent some time discussing Kino's dream of Coyotito being able to read and what that would mean for his people (knowledge is power). We connected the inability to read with slavery and discussed the idea that the slaves were not allowed to learn to read because they would gain too much power if they were literate. We also discussed the American Indians' inability to read with the fact that they were tricked into signing contracts that they could not understand.
